Sophia Wallace, Untitled #1 from Truer, C-print, 2008.
I was introduced to Sophia Wallace during a class last year. On her website, she describes this series, Truer, as an autobiographical love story about the universal experience of love and the expectation that it is heterosexual and gender normative. While showing us these photographs, she divulged that it was hard to not be allowed to celebrate her love. I respect and admire this work so much for the way she acknowledges this - beautifully, without pretense, sentimentality, or generalizations.
